Practice Gap

Women are consistently underrepresented in certain professions and sectors of academia, especially in the domains of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Although a large majority of the healthcare workforce is female, women are notably under-represented in leadership and the highest-paid roles.  This lecture and discussion will uncover one source of this gender bias: the stereotype associating intellectual talent more with men than women. Dr. Bian will provide experimental evidence supporting this theory and developmental data suggesting that the gender brilliance stereotype and its consequences take root in early childhood. Finally, Dr. Bian will share findings on potential ways to bridge this gender gap at its developmental roots. 

General Program Learning Objectives

As a result of this program, attendees will be able to:

1. Recognize the onset of gender bias in child development and its ramifications throughout the STEM and healthcare professions.
2. Ascertain the source of children’s inference that men and boys are more “brilliant” than girls and women.
3. Practice strategies for preventing gender stereotype from emerging in children.
